Everything About Your SIM Card

This page provides answers to the most frequently asked questions about SIM cards, including how to change them, security codes, and the difference between physical SIM cards and eSIMs.

Changing Your SIM Card

There are several reasons why you may need to change your SIM card, such as switching to a new provider, dealing with a blocked phone, or upgrading to a new device. Follow these steps to change your SIM card:

  • Locate the SIM card compartment on the side of your phone and use the provided tool or a paperclip to open it.
  • Remove the old SIM card and insert the new one.
  • Securely close the compartment.
  • Enter the PIN code for your new SIM card when prompted to activate it.

Understanding SIM Locks

A SIM lock is a digital restriction that prevents your phone from being used with other providers. Before getting a SIM-only subscription, it is recommended to check whether your phone has a SIM lock.

  • Insert a different SIM card to test if your phone is locked.
  • Find your IMEI number by dialing *#06# or checking your device settings.
  • Use IMEI.info to check your phone’s lock status.

If your phone is SIM-locked, your provider must unlock it. Typically, they provide an unlock code. If your phone is over a year old, this service is often free. Otherwise, a one-time fee may apply.

PIN and PUK Codes

Your SIM card has a four-digit PIN code that protects your data. This code is printed on the back of your SIM card and can be changed for security reasons. If you enter the PIN incorrectly three times, your SIM card will be blocked, and you will need the PUK code to unlock it.

  • The PUK code is an eight-digit number provided with your SIM card.
  • If you do not know your PUK code, contact your provider.
  • Entering the PUK code incorrectly nine times will permanently block your SIM card.

On an iPhone, you can change your SIM PIN by navigating to Settings > Phone > SIM PIN and selecting Change PIN. You must enter your current PIN before making changes.

SIM Card Number (ICC-ID)

The SIM card number, or ICC-ID (Integrated Circuit Card ID), is a unique 13-digit identifier that connects your phone to your network provider. It usually starts with 8931 and can be found:

  • On the back of your SIM card, near the gold chip.
  • In your phone’s settings.
  • Using the “SIM Card” app on Android devices.
  • By contacting your provider.

Duo-SIM and Dual-SIM

There are two types of multi-SIM functionalities:

  • Duo-SIM: Two SIM cards linked to the same number, allowing use in different devices. However, both devices cannot be used simultaneously.
  • Dual-SIM: A phone with two SIM card slots, enabling the use of two different numbers on one device. This is useful for separating business and personal calls.

Most modern smartphones support dual-SIM functionality.

Understanding eSIM

eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into your phone that eliminates the need for a physical SIM card.

  • It functions similarly to a physical SIM, storing your phone number and network data.
  • Switching providers is easier, as changes can be made digitally without replacing a SIM card.
  • eSIM allows multiple subscriptions to be stored on one device.
  • Its design saves space, making phones slimmer and lighter.
  • eSIMs are more durable, as they are not susceptible to water or dust damage.

With an eSIM, you can quickly change plans and providers without requiring a new physical SIM card.
